Social and Environmental Responsibility

A strong commitment to corporate social responsibility is one of our core values. We have established a reputation as a global leader in this area and have been recognized as a model corporate citizen with a reputation for integrity, environmental responsibility and the highest standards of business conduct.

At work
  • Highly efficient lighting, heating, cooling and insulation have led to a 30% kWh energy reduction in Canada since 2001, which translates into a reduction of about 4 500 tons (4 083 tonnes) of CO2 equivalent.
  • We make the best use of our natural environment (e.g., daylighting, ground cooling), have pesticide free landscaping and integrated storm water management systems that promote natural filtration of the storm water.
  • Our Technical Center in Shanghai is one of the most energy efficient buildings of its kind in China and uses 40% less energy than typical buildings.
  • All our campuses have waste diversion programs in place. Our Bolton campus, for example, has a 94% waste diversion rate and each year generates in excess of CDN $1.3 million in revenue while saving more than $225,000 in disposal costs. Our Luxembourg campus generates 400,000€ in revenue for plastic and metal recycling and recovers 90,000€ for other waste.
  • Through our proactive chemical management program, we have reduced the number of hazardous chemicals we use by approximately 40%.
  • Husky’s Bolton campus regularly receives a cash rebate from the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) for low accident rates relative to industry peers.
In the community
  • Our EHS Team acts both as a liaison and a general resource for those in the community seeking information on environmental responsibility. Over 1000 Husky team members have been trained on energy conservation best practices at home and in the workplace.
  • Team members are rewarded for making environmentally responsible choices in their personal lives, such as recycling and using hybrid or fuel efficient cars.
  • Since 1996, Husky has participated in Pollution Probe’s Clean Air Commute, a program that involves vehicle emission testing and an educational campaign.
  • The Husky Corporate Green Fleet Policy limits vehicle selection based on fuel efficiency, mandates regular vehicle maintenance and is revised annually to ensure that advances in transportation alternatives are incorporated as they become available.
  • As one of 15 companies selected by the Chinese government to participate in the Shanghai Environmental Base, Husky Shanghai assists in organizing environmental protection volunteer activities, interactive environmental education for primary and secondary school students, and provides citizens with visual education to improve their environmental awareness
  • In 2007, Husky achieved sales of more than US $1 billion for the first time in our history. To mark the occasion we partnered with Tree Canada to plant 3400 trees – one for each team member around the world.
